Lindsay Thomson is an interdisciplinary artist and writer curious about natural and man-made worlds, and the cacophonies and harmonies that exist between them. Through abstract, organic forms reminiscent of folk iconography and pastoral imagery, Lindsay creates works that recall impressions of forgotten memories and still corners of imagined landscapes and facades. In addition to painting, collage and illustration, Lindsay practices film photography in order to record quotidian moments found in the organic and in the architectural. The slow and calculated process of shooting film serves as a meditation— a way to glean source material or field notes for other mediums of making. Lindsay’s intuitive creative process is an ode to the hidden wonders in mundanity, and the enduring qualities of small moments.
I believe in histories and stories, and I believe pasts are revealed in everyday, present moments. Emotions are primordial. We have been feeling since the beginning of time. And while civilization may have drastically changed since its beginnings, humanity still relies on the same fundamental ideals, and we have the same fundamental ways to represent these ideals. I am interested in the passing down of stories, not necessarily of the narrations themselves, but of the small, enduring symbols, visually and metaphorically, that thread them together over generations. A candle giving light, a curtain providing protection, a flower representing rebirth. I am also interested in the abstraction of these objects– how a curtain painted a certain way can be mistaken for a wing, or the wing becomes a wave which then becomes a tree trunk. A flower becomes a whirlpool, or the shadow of a leaf becomes more tangible than the leaf itself.
